In fall 2007, Oregon State University adopted a color-coded alert system for helping members of the OSU community differentiate quickly the importance of messages relating to campus safety. The easy-to-remember green, yellow and red alert codes are defined as follows:
GREEN status signifies that campus is operating under normal conditions or has returned to normal conditions after a period of heightened alert.
YELLOW status means that campus is on alert, with conditions or circumstances that could pose a threat to public and/or individual safety. This alert status encourages campus community members to be on the lookout for changing conditions and/or additional campus messages with updates on the circumstance in question. Examples include a pending storm that promises unsafe road conditions or a power outage affecting multiple campus buildings.
RED status signifies potential threats to public or individual safety that require action on behalf of community members or that are causing a change in normal operation conditions of the university. Examples include severe weather requiring closure of one or more OSU campuses or a gas leak requiring evacuation of a campus building.
Campus emergencies that involve imminent, significant danger to the campus community will be addressed via the university's Emergency Notification System. Register for voice, e-mail and text-message alerts via this system at the OSU sign-up portal.
