There are now hundreds of confirmed cases of H1N1flu, often described as “swine flu,” in the United States and other countries around the world. Several probable cases have been identified in Oregon. OSU Student Health Services reports no suspected cases on campus, but SHS officials are monitoring the situation in conjunction with Oregon University System colleagues and officials with the Benton County Health Department. Events scheduled for campus this weekend are going forward as scheduled, unless otherwise indicated for reasons other than the flu outbreak.
Please check this Alert page several times throughout the day for updates.

Oregon State University is working on a variety of fronts to prepare for potential cases of swine flu, which is receiving global attention. There have been 91 confirmed cases of Swine Influenza A (H1N1), or swine flu, in the United States as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, though none in Oregon.
However, the university continues to closely monitor the situation and will post regular online updates on the OSU Alert Page at: www.alert.oregonstate.edu. For those without immediate online access, we will post recorded messages at: 541-737-8000. Please check these sites regularly as we may be posted updates more than once a day.
OSU Facilities Services and Student Health Services are working with appropriate local and state agencies to monitor potential risk to campus. The World Health Organization today raised its pandemic alert level to Phase 5 based on its confirmed human-to-human transmission and growing number of cases globally. Because of that status, the university has activated its Emergency Operations Center for the purposes of coordinating and disseminating information to campus.
The university has an established Pandemic Response Plan as well as an Emergency Communications Plan, and is preparing for a variety of scenarios. Thus far, the cases in the United States have been less serious than those abroad. The Centers for Disease Control is the best source of information about the current national and international status of the situation. That site is at: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

Many in the OSU community have noted media coverage this week of an outbreak of gastrointestinal disease among some student populations. Benton County health officials investigating the outbreak suspect that the cause may be an infection from the family of noroviruses. Such viruses can cause sudden-onset and acute gastroenteritis in humans, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramping, low-grade fever, chills, headache and muscle aches lasting 1-2 days. They are also highly contagious and easily spread. If you develop these symptoms, please remain at home for 72 hours after symptoms resolve or contact your medical provider.
The good news is norovirus infection can be prevented through diligent washing of hands, careful food preparation and other easy steps. If you have questions about norovirus or would like to know of actions you can take to stay healthy, please visit the Centers for Disease Control's Q&A page on noroviruses.
