An electrical malfunction has caused a power outage to the following campus buildings this morning: Snell, Kerr, Pharmacy, Education, Gymnastics, Women's Center, McAlexander, McNary. The Pharmacy Building is being cleared immediately. The other buildings remain open and accessible. Facilities Services crews are working to repair the damage and project that service may be restored within the hour.
Snow and icy road conditions are forecast for Monday morning and throughout the rest of the coming week. In light of these conditions, Oregon State University remains on Yellow alert -- fully open, but operating under heightened caution.
Faculty, staff and students who commute to and from OSU during these challenging weather conditions are encouraged to exercise their best personal judgment when deciding whether to travel.
OSU Facilities Services and Oregon State Police urge caution for all driving to campus this morning in Corvallis, as road conditions are icy throughout the area. Please allow for extra time for your commute, drive slowly, and be aware that road ice is not always visible to motorists. The university is open and operating under normal conditions.
Many in the OSU community have noted media coverage this week of an outbreak of gastrointestinal disease among some student populations. Benton County health officials investigating the outbreak suspect that the cause may be an infection from the family of noroviruses. Such viruses can cause sudden-onset and acute gastroenteritis in humans, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramping, low-grade fever, chills, headache and muscle aches lasting 1-2 days. They are also highly contagious and easily spread. If you develop these symptoms, please remain at home for 72 hours after symptoms resolve or contact your medical provider.
The good news is norovirus infection can be prevented through diligent washing of hands, careful food preparation and other easy steps. If you have questions about norovirus or would like to know of actions you can take to stay healthy, please visit the Centers for Disease Control's Q&A page on noroviruses.
After being closed on Tuesday due to heavy snow, OSU-Cascades has fully reopened this morning. Classes and regularly scheduled activities have all resumed. OSU Cascades has cancelled classes for the remainder of today (Tuesday, Jan. 8) due to heavy snowfall in the Central Oregon region. Campus officials are working with Central Oregon Community College leaders to determine whether classes will resume tomorrow as scheduled. The campus remains open to employees, but students are encouraged to avoid traveling to campus for the remainder of the day.
