Oregon State Police/Department of Public Safety

This Security Alert is distributed as a means of informing the Oregon State University community of recent incidents of public interest. The events described below continue to be of concern with regard to personal safety and/or the protection of property.

Please read the following information carefully. This will help you to make an informed decision about your response to these incidents.


Attempted Abduction

Sept. 30, 2004 5:30pm
The Oregon State Police have announced that an arrest has been made today of an individual charged with the assault that occurred in the area of 26th and Western on the OSU campus yesterday. Information will soon be posted on the Oregon State Police website.

Sept. 29, 2004
On Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at about 6:30AM, a 21 year old college student at Oregon State University reported that a suspect attempted to grab her as she was walking in the area of 26th and Western on the OSU campus. The victim said that a man came up from behind, grabbed her, she pulled away and ran away from the suspect to a nearby area. As she ran, she noticed the suspect run in an opposite direction. The victim immediately notified police of the incident.

The woman was not injured. The victim is a third year OSU student who lives off-campus.

Officers from the Oregon State Police and the Corvallis Police Department immediately responded to the area and began a search. State Police investigators are being assisted by the Oregon State Police Crime Lab as well as detectives from Corvallis Police Department and Benton County Sheriff's Office. The suspect has not been located.

Suspect Description:

  • Young white male adult, early mid-twenties
  • Approximately 5'6" tall
  • Medium build
  • Wearing a black possibly nylon material zippered hooded jacket and black pants

The OSP requests vigilance in keeping housing units secure and encouraging students to travel in pairs whenever possible as added personal security measures.

  • Be aware of what is going on around you.
  • Whenever possible, carry a cellular phone when walking in remote areas.
  • If you see something suspicious, call the police.
  • Take precautions day and night. Do not walk or jog alone.
  • "Blue Light Phones" can be found at many locations on the campus.
  • Remember that the most important part of the campus safety equation is your watchfulness and good judgment!
